  • Make your own chess set: Go to a thrift or second hand store to the toys section. Find plastic figures for each the players in chess. Make your king and queen player something hilarious! If the thrift store doesn't have a chess board, make your own at home. You can buy a square of masonite board at your local art store for a couple bucks and color in the squares with Sharpe or black paint to make your own board. 

 

  • Check your area to see if there are any county fairs or carnivals, expositions or trade shows. These provide most of the entertainment so it isn't hard to come up with things to do or talk about.  You can get adventurous and go on a short road trip to one of these events in a surrounding area if it interest you enough. 

 

  • Support a local high school team and attend a sporting event, play, or concert. Some high schools can really surprise you with their skills! Its fun to feel the excitement dedicated high school sports fans.  

 

  • Look on a local college website for events put on by the college Sometimes they may host lectures that may be of mutual interest with your date. Also check here for plays, concerts, or sporting events put on by the college. 

 

  • Boat Race: Find a stream, small irrigation canal, or large gutter that has a nice flow of water. With aluminum foil or another material of your choice, form it into a boat.   • Plant it and watch it grow: Buy a pack of bean seeds (or other seed of choice) for $1, styrofoam cups, and a small bag of soil (or dirt from your yard). Plant seeds together and have a contest of who's gets the largest over a few weeks. It is fun if you name your plant and give it a personality over time. Be as silly as you want. This date creates an ongoing topic of conversation and a reason to keep in touch with the new romantic interest you are pursuing.

 

  • Have a food fight: Go to a local park or your back yard if its big enough. Use foods that dissolve with water for easier clean up such as pudding and whipped cream. Pudding is cheap too! If you are feeling daring, don't let your date know you are planning a food fight, rather invite your date over for "desert" Start the food fight with your friend you are doubling with that also knows about the food fight then get everyone to join into the fun. Sometimes it makes for a great story that a food fight "spontaneously emerged." This can either be really funny or really bad, so use your judgment.  

 

  • Attend a flea market or go yard sale shopping with a $5-$10 budget. There are lots of fun games you can make up to go along with a yard selling date. Click here for a great yard sale scavenger hunt! 

 

  • Go to a museum (there are more types than art museums) Look in your area for dinosaur museums, historical museums, science museums, food museums, animal museums, etc. These can be a lot of fun and create a lot of great conversation.   • Plastic cup mini golf: Go to a building in the evening such as a campus building, church etc. Set up a golf course with plastic cups then start at the beginning and golf. (can get really cheap clubs at DI) A fun date to get to know each other. 

  • Put together a puzzle: You can find cheap ones at the dollar store, or go all out and get a 10,000. 3-D puzzles are fun too! Put a movie on in the background or just talk. Have a bowl of mms or your favorite munchies to munch on while putting together your puzzle.

  • Art date: Finger paint, play with playdough, color with crayons or markers in a coloring books or make your own pictures. Don't stress about making a pretty picture or having mad art skills, just have a good time getting your hands messy with art!   • Blast from the past: Pull out your old school yearbooks. This date becomes really fun when you try to guess each others age in the picture. Talk about funny school stories.
